What Therapy is and is Not

"Therapy isn't curing somebody of something; it is a means of helping a person explore himself, his life, his consciousness. My purpose as a therapist is to find out what it means to be human. Every human being must have a point at which he stands against the culture, where he says, 'This is me and the world be damned!' Leaders have always been the ones to stand against the society — Socrates, Christ, Freud, all the way down the line." - Rollo May

This is fantastic post. I think marriage counseling is the best in a way where both are not even hearing each other but the best is the thing as dean said that by sacrifice of one their is always a solution to other.

A very nice post indeed. I like to explore the client's personal story to help them understand who they are and the person they wish to become.

That's true. Therapists give their patients a second life. They give them a chance to experience the world filled with joy and happiness, with renewed vigor in their hearts, and a more positive outlook in life. You've said it the right, my friend.

Thank you for your post. I am a <a href="http://vantagepointdallascounseling.com>counselor in Dallas </a>, and in working with my clients, they almost all come into therapy not entirely sure what to expect. They know of therapy and that it supposedly helps with problems in their lives, but they do not know what counseling or therapy actually are. Many of them go to the web to figure this out, so again, great article with good information.

Well said. Therapy is both more and less than people often think it is, and responsibility and choice is a big part of that.

What a truly inspiring quote that is. I think for a substance abuse programs to be effective the person should be in it 100% and he/she also have loved ones at his/her side all the time.

I think this quote is absolutely true! I was really nervous to go to a counselor the first time I went. I'm not afraid anymore because going has helped me discover more about myself and has made me more comfortable in my own skin. Counselors really do help!

I used to think counseling was just for people with big problems and that all counselors were quacks that wanted to diagnose people with things they didn't have (my family had bad experiences with them). But when I had really bad depression, I took the chance of seeing a counselor and was so glad I did. It helped me so much! Counseling was not at all what I expected.
